The Rise of Patient Engagement: What’s Changed in the Last 5 Years?

Patient engagement in healthcare has evolved from an aspiration into a measurable, strategic priority. Over the past five years, a combination of digital innovation, changing patient expectations, and expanded access to information has fundamentally reshaped how patients interact with the healthcare system.

Today’s patients are more informed, more connected, and more involved in their care than ever before.

A Measurable Shift in Engagement

In a recent global study conducted by Clear Point Health within the treatment area of obesity, we observed a clear shift: both the perception and reality of patient engagement have changed significantly over a five-year period.

Primary care providers overwhelmingly report that patients are more engaged in their healthcare today than they were just a few years ago. Yet there remains a gap between current engagement levels and where providers believe patients could be. Many patients are actively participating, but may not yet be fully empowered.

The Digital Acceleration of Patient Engagement

One of the most significant drivers of this shift is the rapid growth of digital health content, especially video.

Patients are no longer relying solely on in-office conversations or printed materials. Instead, they are actively seeking information across trusted online platforms. For years, resources like WebMD, Mayo Clinic, and Medscape have served as foundational hubs for patient education. Today, that ecosystem has expanded dramatically.

Video content, in particular, has emerged as a powerful force in patient engagement. Nearly 88% of individuals report watching health-related content on platforms like YouTube, and more than 84% say the information they consume directly influences their health decisions.

This represents a major shift in how patients learn, evaluate, and act on healthcare information.

At the same time, social media and digital thought leaders (including physicians, allied health professionals, and patient advocates) are playing an increasingly influential role. These voices are helping translate complex medical information into accessible, relatable content that resonates with modern audiences.

From Access to Activation

Access to information alone does not guarantee engagement, but it creates the conditions for it. The real transformation lies in how that information is delivered and applied.

Patients today want content that is:

  • Easy to understand

  • Delivered at the right moment

  • Relevant to their personal experience

  • Actionable within their daily lives

When these elements come together, patients move from passive recipients of care to active participants in decision-making.

What This Means for Healthcare Organizations

The rise in patient engagement presents both an opportunity and a responsibility. Organizations that understand how patients access, process, and act on information will be better positioned to support adherence, improve outcomes, and build lasting trust.

At Clear Point Health, we believe this shift underscores the importance of combining data-driven insights with human-centered design. Tools like Patient Journey Maps, Patient Flow Maps, and targeted education strategies help organizations move beyond awareness and into meaningful engagement.

Patient engagement is foundational. And as digital influence continues to grow, the organizations that meet patients where they are will be the ones that shape the future of care.
